V-Flat vs V-Flat 2.0?
Before reviewing the different ways to use the foldable V-Flat 2.0, let’s take a look at the upgrades in this 2.0 model compared to the previous V-Flat.
Magnetic Flap Closure
The V-Flat 2.0 features a new magnetic closure system, replacing the previous Velcro. This ensures no light leakage and provides a secure, long-lasting fit that is both reliable and easy to use.
U-Channel Edge Protector
The new version of the V-Flat includes a U-channel edge protector around the entire V-Flat, maximizing durability and longevity while preventing warping.
1. Reflecting Light
The white side of the V-Flat 2.0 acts as a large reflector, bouncing light from your strobe back onto the model or subject. This helps soften shadows and create more even lighting across the scene.
For example, if one side of the model appears too dark or lacks detail, positioning the V-Flat strategically can fill in the shadows, ensuring a more balanced and natural look.
It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance your photos, especially in portrait and product photography.

2. Subtracting Light
The black side of the V-Flat is perfect for negative fill, as it absorbs and removes light, doing the opposite of the white side.
If you want to add more shadows to your subject’s face for a moody, dramatic effect but have a white wall reflecting unwanted light, simply place the black side of the V-Flat on the side of the subject you want darker.
It will absorb the excess light, preventing it from bouncing around and interfering with the areas you want to keep in shadow.

3. Photography Backdrop
Another less traditional way to use the V-Flat is as a backdrop. While it isn’t specifically designed for this purpose, it works surprisingly well in this role.
V-Flats are an ideal solution for headshot and portrait photographers, especially when shooting images that don’t require full-body shots. Their compact size and versatile design make them easy to set up and adjust for these types of shoots.
4. Evenly Light a Background
If you need to shoot a catalog image with a pure white background, the V-Flat can be a simple and effective solution.
Normally, achieving this effect requires multiple lights with umbrellas aimed at the background. However, by positioning two V-Flats with strobes on either side and pointing the lights into the V-Flats, you can create a beautifully even spread of light for a clean, white backdrop.

5. Flagging Light
The V-Flat can also be used for flagging light, which is a technical term for blocking unwanted light.
During a studio shoot with windows, natural light from outside can spill into the scene, interfering with your setup. This is especially problematic during bright hours when uncontrolled light affects shadows and exposure.
By positioning a large V-Flat, you can effectively block unwanted light, giving you full control over your lighting environment.

6. Chin Light
You can also use the V-Flat to add light underneath your model, brightening the shadows under the chin.
By positioning the V-Flat in a halfway folded position, it acts as a great posing table, catching light from above and softly filling in the shadows for a more balanced look.

7. Changing Room
The V-Flat can also serve as a makeshift changing room. If the studio lacks a dedicated space and the bathroom is far away, a V-Flat offers a quick and convenient solution.
By setting it up off to the side of the background, you create a private space where the model can change comfortably and efficiently.
8. Wind Machine
This may not be the most common use for a V-Flat, but it can be incredibly useful in certain shooting situations.
By folding the V-Flat and waving it up and down, you can create a wind effect, making it a great alternative to an electronic wind machine. This simple trick is especially effective for adding movement to hair or clothing in a shoot.

9. Videography
V-Flats aren’t just for photography, they’re just as effective for videography.
While commonly used by photographers, they can perfectly be used with continuous lighting, just as they do with strobes. Their versatility makes them a valuable tool for shaping and controlling light in both photo and video shoots.
